Ad splash pages have been one of the top producing forms of affiliate marketing for me. I have had great success in generating targeted search engine traffic to merchant programs which has resulted in great conversions. Translation: high quality traffic to merchants equals tons of merchant sales equals lots of affiliate commission income.
What is a "Splash Page"? Effectively what I call a "Splash Page" is a keyword rich doorway page designed to get quality targeted traffic from search engines to an affiliate merchant.
Doorway pages have long been a cause for debate on the right and wrong ways to use them. The way I use these doorway pages is to fill them with keyword rich quality content (this is the key) that not only sells the merchant the page was designed to promote but also provides the visitor with some kind of useful information (either about the merchant or the products - this is when your content becomes quality content). This gets visitors to the page, sells the merchant to the visitor so that they will visit the merchant's site, and hopefully results in the visitor purchasing a product from the merchant which generates an affiliate commission.
"Splash" or doorway pages can be created to promote a specific merchant or a specific product and I have had good success using them in both ways.
Creating Splash Pages
The first thing is to decide on the keywords and/or keyphrases that you want to target with the page. Only choose 3 or 4 different keywords or phrases you want to target with each splash page.
Remember to keep these relevant to the products or the merchant you are promoting. In other words do not plan to receive targeted converting traffic for the keyphrase "boat parts" if you are promoting a merchant that deals with "motorcycle parts".
These keywords/keyphrases will become the content of your META Keyword Tag.
Choose one of your keywords/phrases and come up with a title for the page. Include this keyword/phrase within the title.
Once you have decided on the keywords/phrases and the page title write 3 to 4 paragraphs on the merchant and the products the merchant sells keeping your keyphrases/words in mind. Not only do you want to describe (or sell) the merchant or their products you want the text to focus on the keywords and phrases you are trying to promote. This will become the main content for your page.
If you are not that good at writing, or you are just having some problems figuring out how to promote the merchant or product, visit the merchants site and check out their about page, their ordering policies, and their product pages. Many merchants allow you to use (sometimes even copy word for word) content from their site's when promoting their programs, check the programs Terms of Service (TOS) to see if you are allowed to do this. Also most larger affiliate programs have a program manager that you can contact for help or ideas on promoting the merchant and the merchant's products.
Now that you have the content for you page written, write a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the content. Again remember to focus on your targeted keywords. This summary will become your META Description Tag for the page.
After you have decided on the keywords, the page title, the page content, and the page description it is time to put it all together. Add your affiliate links and merchant banners within the content.
Here are a couple of good tips to designing your page:
- At the top of your page make sure to include your title as a header:
<h1>Page Title</h1>.
- Add some graphics/images of the product(s) or that relate to the product, but don't get too flashy - You do not want to confuse the visitor or distract them from the merchant. Make sure you include alt tags for the images, REMEMBER TO FOCUS ON YOUR KEYWORDS/PHRASES. Link these images directly to the merchant or product you are promoting.
- Make sure to use text links to the merchant or product as well as banners and images, for example, Visit Merchant for More Keyword or Click Here to Buy Keyword.
- If you are promoting a specific product (and the merchant sells other similar products) make sure you also link to the merchant's home page. Example: For more Keywords visit Merchant.
- Test the page - including your affiliate links. Make sure all the links work and that they direct the visitor to the pages on the merchants site you are promoting.
